The alarm is based on measurements of temperature differences on the inlet water and the surrounding room temperature.
When the water with a temperature of approx. 8 degrees flow through the pipe system, the pipes are cooled. The water alarm compares the temperature of the pipe with the ambient temperature. Already after 48 hours, the alarm can tell if there is a constant flow, that is, leaks in your pipe system. If the installation is tight, the pipe and room temperature are equalized within approx. 3 hours. If the installation is leaking the temperatures will not be equalized and alarm is given after approx. 48 hours.
