Just 500 meters north of Château Petrus, you’ll find the vineyards of Moncets. The terroir is more or less the same—only separated by the small brook that divides Pomerol from Lalande-de-Pomerol in this completely flat landscape. The estate was fully converted to organic farming in 2017, and from the 2021 vintage the wines are organically certified.

Beyond the sustainable approach in the vineyards—where sheep graze among the vines, beehives have been installed, ponds have been dug for birds, and there’s a strong overall focus on biodiversity—it is, however, the cellar work that sets Moncets apart from many of its neighbors. Fermentations are carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, with no sulfur used before or after vinification, no pump-overs, and the wines are aged for 18 months in a mix of amphorae, concrete tanks, and oak barrels. No filtration is done at bottling. Depending on the vintage, the wine is made from about 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

The wine immediately opens with a fantastic aroma bursting with fresh berries—both light and dark. There is no scent of old cedarwood, so often found in Bordeaux, but rather an airy fragrance with notes of herbs, tea, orange, and a subtle touch of the finest dark chocolate. The real surprise comes on the palate: the wine shows a wonderfully smooth and flowing style, without ever compromising on intensity or depth. A stunning wine already in its youth, though it will gain even greater complexity if cellared for 5–10 years.

"If I were to choose with my heart—and one should—then Moncets would fill my cellar. A completely new image of Bordeaux... climate adaptation in the vineyard with the choice of clones and rootstocks, all aimed at one goal: FRESHNESS! Packed with bursting strawberries, Rød Orlik apples, rosehip, rooibos tea, juiciness—and the magic is that it unmistakably tastes of Pomerol!"
