A Bonded Seal, also called a Dowty Washer, is a rectangular-shaped metal washer with a trapezoidal ring of vulcanized rubber on the inside. Both the washer and the rubber material can be selected for the specific purpose. Bonded Seals can replace copper washers when working under high pressure. Self-centering Bonded Seals are an advancement of traditional Bonded Seals and have a design that allows them to center themselves around the bolt or screw axis. This self-centering feature ensures more precise placement and improves sealing efficiency, especially in applications where precise alignment is critical. They reduce the risk of misalignment during installation and provide a more reliable and consistent seal. Self-centering Bonded Seals are often preferred in complex or high-end applications where precision and reliability are key factors. The metal ring can be made from various materials such as galvanized steel or stainless steel, while the elastomeric ring is typically made from materials like Nitrile, Viton, or EPDM, depending on the requirements of the application. Using AISI 304 stainless steel provides better corrosion resistance. This is advantageous in environments where the seals are exposed to moisture, certain chemicals, or corrosive liquids. The improved corrosion resistance extends the service life of the seal and the integrity of the connection it ensures.
