FLIR Si2-LD is a handheld instrument for locating leaks in, for example, compressed air systems. A leak in a pressurized system emits ultrasound that is not audible to the human ear. FLIR Si2-LD is built with 124 super-sensitive microphones, positioned so it is possible to determine the direction of the leak as well as the size of the leak when the area is scanned. This method is typically 10 times faster than traditional scans performed with ultrasonic equipment and the “sniffer method.” The instrument operates from a distance of 0.3 to 200 meters, finds potential leaks of gases, air, or steam in pressurized systems extremely quickly, and indicates the calculated leak rate in liters/min.
FLIR Si2-LD builds an acoustic image using the 124 microphones; the acoustic image is transposed in real time onto a digital camera image, allowing the user to accurately locate the sound source and thus the leak. The images are stored in internal memory as documentation and for later repair/troubleshooting of any leaks. In a typical industrial environment, the instrument can find leaks from 0.0032 l/min. The problem of a noisy industrial environment and the use of closed headphones, as known from traditional ultrasonic equipment, does not exist with the Si2-LD, because you use the LCD screen to visualize the leaks instead of listening for them.
Through a regular maintenance routine, FLIR Si2-LD can help the company find leaks in, for example, compressed air systems while they are still minor leaks. This can save a lot of money on electricity costs and prevent premature wear of compressors. Si2-LD quantifies the leak size to indicate how much energy was lost and how much money is saved by repairing the problem.

When FLIR Si2 is set to “Mechanical Fault Mode,” the correct filters and settings are selected in the instrument, allowing you to search for worn/noisy bearings in pumps or similar equipment. In this way, you have the opportunity to find and repair mechanical problems before they result in equipment failure and machine downtime due to a defective bearing.
