Just 500 meters north of Château Petrus lie the vineyards of Moncets. The terroir is virtually the same, only separated by the small brook that divides Pomerol from Lalande-de-Pomerol in this completely flat landscape. Everything here was converted to organic farming in 2017, and from the 2021 vintage the wines are organically certified. In addition to the sustainable approach in the vineyards – with sheep grazing among the vines, beehives installed, ponds dug for birds, and a strong focus on biodiversity – it is in the cellar that Moncets truly distinguishes itself from many of its neighbors. Fermentation takes place exclusively with natural yeasts, with no use of sulfur before or after vinification, no pump-overs, and the wines are aged for 18 months in a mix of amphorae, cement vats, and oak barrels. No filtration at bottling. Depending on the vintage, the blend consists of about 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wine opens immediately with a fantastic aroma packed with fresh berries of both the light and dark varieties. There are none of the old cedarwood notes so often found in Bordeaux; instead, the bouquet is airy with nuances of herbs, tea, orange, and a discreet touch of the finest dark chocolate. But it is on the palate that the wine truly surprises, offering a wonderfully smooth and flowing style without compromising on intensity or depth. A superb wine in its youth that will develop even greater complexity if cellared for 5–10 years.
