"Shelly i4 Gen4 is a smart 4-channel input module supporting Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Zigbee.
Shelly i4 Gen4 turns ordinary wall switches, push buttons, motion sensors and similar devices into smart triggers. The module reads whether a signal is present on its inputs and sends wireless commands on to other Shelly devices, scenes and automations. Its compact body (37 x 42 x 15 mm) fits behind the switch in wall and ceiling boxes, so the existing switch can stay where it is.
Two things to note before installing: the Shelly i4 Gen4 has no relay and does not switch a load itself — it reads inputs and commands other devices' relays. And it needs both live and neutral (L and N) in the box. If there is only a live conductor behind the old switch, a neutral has to be brought in.
Works locally — no gateway required. Every Shelly Wi-Fi device has a built-in web server, so a wide range of functions keeps working whether or not there is internet. No gateway is needed and a single Shelly device is enough to start. Built-in memory means sunrise, sunset, schedules and scenes are remembered even when the network is down. All inputs are fully programmable and only need the local network to talk to other devices. An active internet connection is still recommended, as it unlocks further functionality.
Use cases
• Turn existing wall switches and push buttons into smart triggers, without the customer giving up the switches already on the wall.
• Scene control: one press turns on the light, lowers the blinds and sets the heating — four inputs give four different scenes from the same box.
• Control of other Shelly devices: relays, dimmers and shutter controllers across Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Matter.
• Convert old motion sensors, key switches and other volt-free contacts into automation inputs.
• Central input node for local scripts and webhooks in more advanced installations.
• Zigbee booster: every installed unit acts as a router in the Zigbee network and strengthens coverage in larger homes and buildings.
Technical, connectivity and installation
• No relay: the module does not switch a load itself but passes commands to other devices' relays. That is precisely why it can sit behind an existing switch without changing the existing wiring.
• Supply: 110-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz, consumption below 1 W. Requires both live and neutral (L and N) in the box.
• Four inputs on screw terminals. Each input can read a constant on/off state or button presses — single, double and triple short press plus long press — and is configured individually.
• Matter compatible: integrates with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Home Assistant, Samsung SmartThings, Athom Homey and other Matter platforms.
• Multi-protocol chip: Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n/ax, 2.4 GHz) and Zigbee can be used simultaneously on separate platforms. Bluetooth 5 is used for direct communication with Shelly BLU devices.
• Zigbee repeater: the device acts as a router in the Zigbee network and extends the range of the other Zigbee devices in the installation.
• For professional installations: KNX net/IP and virtual components.
• Terminals: 0.5 to 4 mm², max. 0.4 Nm, 6-7 mm stripped length. Size 37 x 42 x 15 mm, weight 19 g.
• Operating temperature -20 to 40 °C, 30-70 % RH, max. 2000 m. Built-in temperature sensor.
