A compression spring is the most commonly used type of wire spring. A compression spring is an open coil spring whose function is usually to resist a compressive force. Compression springs can have many different designs, from conical and cylindrical to barrel and pulley-shaped.
Small springs are used e.g. in lock cylinders, while larger springs can be seen, for example, on the playground seesaws. They are normally produced with a constant diameter, but can also be made in other shapes where there is a need for it – eg conical compression springs, concave, convex or a combination thereof. In other words, the springs are available in many sizes and are used in many different connections and within many different industries.
